UPTON,, NY 11973-5000 A -- PYROLSIS-LIKE AND DESTRUCTIVE DISTILLATION-LIKE TECHNOLOGIES SOL
REQUEST FOR INTEREST-REV. 1 POC Contact Point, JOANNE WORTMAN,
(516)361-6800 RFEI - PYROLSIS: THE NORTHEAST WASTE MANAGEMENT
ENTERPRISE (NEWME) IS A PARTNERSHIP FORMED BY BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL
LABORATORY (BNL) AND THE LONG ISLAND RESEARCH INSTITUTE (LIRI). AS PART
OF ITS CONTRACT WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE), NEWME
ANTICIPATES SPONSORING FIELD DEMONSTRATIONS OF INNOVATIVE WASTE
MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGIES. WE ARE INTERESTED IN PYROLYSIS-LIKE
DISTILLATION-LIKE TECHNOLOGIES THAT WOULD BE RELEVANT TO THE DOE WASTE
MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN UP PROGRAMS. PYROLYSIS IS THE
CHEMICAL DECOMPOSITION OF A SUBSTANCE BY DIRECT OR INDIRECT HEAT AND
CAN BE EXOTHERMIC OR ENDOTHERMIC AND MAY INCLUDE THE RECOVERY OF
PRODUCTS FROM THE PROCESS, WHEREAS, DESTRUCTIVE DISTILLATION IS THE
DECOMPOSITION OF ORGANIC MATERIAL BY APPLICATION OF INDIRECT HEAT IN
THE ABSENCE OF OXYGEN/AIR FOLLOWED BY THE RECOVERY OF PRODUCTS FROM THE
ENDOTHERMIC PROCESS. THE DOE HAS MANY CO-MINGLED WASTES FOR WHICH NO
SATISFACTORY WASTE MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGIES ARE AVAILABLE. NEWME IS ALSO
INTERESTED IN BENEFICIAL USES OF VARIOUS WASTE PRODUCTS FROM THESE
PYROLYTIC PROCESSES. NEWME IS REQUESTING AN EXPRESSION OF INTEREST IN
A FIELD DEMONSTRATION ON THE PART OF A COMPANY OR INDIVIDUAL WITH A
PYROLYSIS TECHNOLOGY THAT SUITS CERTAIN DESIRE CONDITIONS INCLUDING THE
FOLLOWING: PORTABLE (EASILY ASSEMBLED AND DISASSEMBLED); SIMPLICITY OF
OPERATION; CAPABLE OF PROCESSING 1-5 TONS/DAY; APPLICABLE TO A WIDE
VARIETY OF WASTES (INCLUDING SLUDGES AND SOILS CONTAINING MIXTURES OF
ORGANIC AND INORGANIC SUBSTANCE, SOME OR ALL OF WHICH MAY BE HAZARDOUS)
AND COMPATIBLE WITH ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS; NEW APPLICATIONS OF
COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGIES ARE ENCOURAGED (PERHAPS SOMETHING
UTILIZED NOW, BUT WITH SOME MODIFICATIONS COULD BECOME USEFUL TO DOE
NEEDS). TECHNOLOGIES ARE ENCOURAGED THAT REQUIRE ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL
INFORMATION WHICH COULD BE PROVIDED THROUGH DEMONSTRATION. INTERESTED
PARTIES TO PARTICIPATE ON A COST-SHARE BASIS (E.G. DIRECT FUNDS,
EQUIPMENT, IN-KIND SERVICES, ETC.) WORKING MODELS (EITHER PILOT OR
BENCH SCALE) WILL BE USED IN FIELD DEMONSTRATIONS. THIS ANNOUNCEMENT
REVISES AND REPLACES IN ITS ENTIRETY PREVIOUS REQUEST FOR INTEREST
WHICH APPEARED IN THE APRIL 13, 1995 ISSUE OF THIS PUBLICATION.
COMPANIES WHO RESPONDED TO THE ORIGINAL PUBLICATION NEED NOT RE-APPLY.
ANY ADDITIONAL COMPANIES MUST SUBMIT THEIR RESPONSE TO THE ADDRESS
LISTED BELOW. ANY AND ALL RESPONSES MUST BE RECEIVED BY JULY 1, 1995.
ALL SUBMITTALS WILL BE TREATED CONFIDENTIALLY, AND THE PROPRIETARY
NATURE OF EACH WILL BE RESPECTED. POINT OF CONTACT: MS. JOANNE WORTMAN,
