COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MAY 23,1995 PSA#1352Westinghouse Hanford Company, TCBD95-04DF, PO Box 1970, MS: B5-32,
Richland, WA 99352 A -- SEEKING MATURE SENSOR TECHNOLOGY: SENSORS OR SYSTEMS TO
``ANTICIPATE'' DIFFERENCES IN PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF LAYERS IN FRONT OF
A CORE SAMPLER SOL TCBD95-04DF. DUE 062595. POC Dann J. Flesher, Phone

NOTE: This is NOT a request for Development of Sampling Devices or
Sampling Strategies. Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC) is seeking a
mature technology that has either a proven capability or a very high
probability of success in ``scanning'' the matrix in front of a core
sampling (core drilling) bit to detect abrupt changes or transitions in
the gross physical properties of the matrix. The overall objective is
to maximize core sample capture in sampling a layered matrix of
radioactive chemical waste. The specific objective is to detect
transitions from solid to liquid, liquid to sludge, etc. prior to
penetrating the interface; this permits the timely change of sampling
tools/techniques to maximize sample capture potential for all layers.
Present sampling methods include a variety of sample tubes and modes;
each permits the capture of waste with a specific range of physical
properties. e.g., one tool will capture a liquid but may not permit
capture of a wet crystalline solid. The needed sensor would detect
transitions from one waste type to another (0 to 20 cm in front of the
drill bit) before the sample tube enters the new layer. The
configuration of the drill bit presents a physical constraint; the
inside diameter is 1.25 inches, outside diameter 2.25 inches. To allow
free sample passage into the sample tube, the sensor may be required
to fit within the 0.5 inch thick annular wall. Other physical
arrangements or sensor locations may be considered. Selection criteria
will be technical merit, and cost. Late submittals may be considered
ONLY if they offer significant technical advantages. Please provide the
following: A) A Title/Name and description of the technology or device
proposed, B) A statement describing maturity, including any past
application examples, C) Any equipment or application cost information
or rough estimates, D) Company Information: primary areas of expertise
or company experience, E) Name of the individual acting as the contact
for information exchange. WHC may enter into contract(s) related to
these needs without further notice. NOTE: All pages of correspondence
should have the solicitation number ``TCBD95-04DF'' clearly displayed
near the top. (139) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0004 19950522\A-0004.SOL)
