not a notice for a solicitation. This is a Request for Information
(RFI). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) requests technical information
from the vendor community on commercially available high-end 1280 x
1024 resolution color 24-bit X-terminals that are fully compatible with
the Data General (DG) operating system and fonts. All elements of the
X-terminal shall be standard products, configured as they would
normally be offered for sale on the commercial market. The General
Environment is as follows: X- terminals would be interfaced via
ethernet network to DG systems running UNIX with X-windows and Motif;
X-terminals would require network connectivity using either thicknet,
thinnet or 10BaseT (one selection per unit); system must support 24-bit
graphics with color support of at least 4096 simultaneous colors
available from a palette of 16.7 million; support both 17'' and 19''
color monitors; support local memory up to at least 128 MBytes; support
keyboard and mouse; have the ability to load operating system software
either from a network host or store locally on a PROM; support Display
PostScript Level 2; support the addition of PCMIA cards; support at
least one each serial and parallel port. General technical information
in addition to information on installation, training, and maintenance
is requested in response to the above description from private
industry in as much detail as organizations are willing to provide. Any
commercially available pricing information is also requested. Any
pricing information submitted that contains restrictions on its
disclosure will be returned to the vendor.The Government may consider
vendors willing to make their hardware/software accessible to the USGS
for a more in-depth examination. This request is not a formal RFP and
NO contract will result from this synopsis. Any subsequent
solicitation will be synopsized prior to its release. All responses
should contain sufficient technical documentation and descriptive
literature to sufficiently describe hardware/software capabilities. The
Government will not pay for information provided in response to this
synopsis. Technical and price information responding to this request
