K -- 5''/54 CALIBER MK 45 GUN MOUNT MODIFICATION SOL N00024-95-R-5626 POC Michael G. Shaffer, Contract Specialist, Code 0256Q, (703) 602-8001. The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA 91) has a requirement for the development of a modification to the 5''/54 Caliber MK 45 MOD 2 Gun Mount (MK 45) to support the extended range requirements of Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS). NSFS requires that the MK 45 be able to accomodate higher energy levels and fire extended range guided munitions (ERGM). The contractor will be required to design, develop, and fabricate up to three (3) prototype ordnance alteration (ORDALT) kits for test and evaluation by the Government. Design limitations exist in the areas of system weight, chamber pressure, barrel length, barrel diameter, train bearing load, recoil distance, ammunition length, and ammunition weight. It is anticipated that a corresponding number of MK 45's (MOD 0 and/or MOD 1) will be provided as Government-Furnished Property (GFP). The projected required delivery dates for the three (3) ORDALT kits are one in July 1997 and two in March 1998. United Defense L. P. is the sole designer, developer and current producer of the MK 45. It is the only known source that possesses the requisite knowledge, technical expertise and production capability necessary to satisfy this requirement. NAVSEA intends to issue a sole source contract to United Defense L. P., Armament Systems Division, 4800 East River Road, Minneapolis, MN 55421 under the authority of 10 U.S.C. 2304 (c)(1).
