The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) requests technical information from the vendor community on commercially available hardware and/or software technology for running PC and Apple Macintosh applications and displaying the applications to a X display on a UNIX client/server network. All elements of the hardware shall be standard products, configured as they would normally be offered for sale on the commercial market. The system would be interfaced via ethernet network to Data General systems running UNIX and NCD X-terminals, both with X-windows and Motif; the system would require network connectivity using either thicknet, thinnet or 10BaseT; the system should be at least the performance of a 100MHz Pentium CPU and have full hardware and operating system (OS) support for up to 16-way SMP (Symmetrical Multi Processing); system memory should be 16MB RAM standard upgradable to 512MB; system should support additional hard disks, have expansion slots, and support at least one each serial and parallel port. General technical information in addition to information on installation, training, and maintenance is requested in response to the above description from private industry in as much detail as organizations are willing to provide. Any commercially available pricing information is also requested. This request is not a formal RFP and NO contract will result from this synopsis. Any subsequent solicitation will be synopsized prior to its release. All responses should contain sufficient technical documentation and descriptive literature to sufficiently describe hardware and software capabilities. The Government will not pay for information provided in response to this synopsis.
