496-4487. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication
Disorders intends to negotiate with the University of Alabama at
Birmingham to conduct an intervention study to determine the degree to
which improving a child's functional skills using mentors to provide
communication skills in their early school years can reduce later
problems in poor school performance and aggressive behavior. The
University of Alabama at Birmingham has been chosen because it has the
only known population based cohort of 800 children observed from the
prenatal period up to age six. Statutory authority: 41 U.S.C. 253 (c)
(1), as set forth in FAR 6.302-1. The cited authority is applicable
because of the unique combination of the cohort population,
comprehensive battery of cognitive, language, and socio-emotional
assessments, as well as, physical growth and health status measures
obtained at birth, age one and between ages five and six. The children
of this study are now enrolled in the greater Birmingham school
districts and are available for intervention efforts. See Numbered
