Desmarais, Program Manager - CRUSADER and LP Technical Subcontracts,
(413) 494-3881. Martin Marietta Defense Systems, a subcontractor to
United Defense - LP under Prime Contract DAAE30-95-C0009, is
contemplating subcontracting for design and manufacturing support of an
obturator (breech ring-to-tube) seal to be used in the 155 mm
Regenerative Liquid Propellant Gun (RLPG) (planned as the primary
armament for the CRUSADER Artillery System) and is soliciting
capability statements from potential qualified suppliers interested in
participating in a competition for design and manufacturing support of
the RLPG obturator seal. The need exists to develop a high pressure (60
kpsi typical) obturator seal capable of operating in the RLPG. The
subcontractor will conduct preliminay concept design, detail design and
fabrication of a high pressure seal capable of interfacing with the
RLPG breech mechanism. The subcontractor should (a) have expertise with
cannon/artillery sealing devices, (b) have expertise with a high
strength materials, (c) have expertise to understand unique material
requirements associated with compatibility with XM46 liquid propellant,
and (d) be capable of providing the following support: (1) expertise
and facilities capable of fabrication of seal hardware, (2) failure
analysis and modification design. Potential qualified
subcontractors/suppliers are requested to submit capability statements
pertaining to the above listed technical needs. These capability
statements (in subcontractor format) should address unique technical
capabilities of their organization, including background on relevant
past experience, facilities capabilities of their organization,
including background on relevant past experience, facilities
capabilities and personnel expertise associated with cannon/artillery
seal design and manufacturing. Subcontractor/Supplier submissions must
be received no later than thirty (30) calendar days after the
publication of this notice and should be submitted via US Mail (or
express mail) to Martin Marietta Defense Systems, 100 Plastics Avenue,
Pittsfield MA 01201, Attention: GW Desmarais, Room 2266. Information
may be submitted via facsimile. Subcontractors whose capability
statements are judged to be relevant to the objectives stated above
will be notified by mail, placed on a bidders list and provided an
opportunity to compete. Martin Marietta Defense Systems reserves the
right to make Small or Small Disadvantaged Business set-aside as
appropriate. Neither the cost of preparing capability statements not
the cost of preparing full proposals will be entertained as allowable
