99 -- AVAILABILITY OF UNCOATED CARBON-CARBON COMPOSITES POC NASA Langley Research Center, Industry Assistance Office, Mail Stop 144, Hampton, VA 23681-0001. Information is being sought on the availability of uncoated carbon-carbon composites for use in the construction of a high temperature antenna structure for the proposed Solar Probe Spacecraft. The antenna will serve as an off-axis X-band antenna as well as the primary thermal shield for the spacecraft. The shield will need to operate in interplanetary space in thermal conditions from 100 K to 2400 K. Specific requirements for the carbon-carbon composites, which will be used to determine detailed physical and mechanical properties for the antenna design/trade off studies, are as follows: Four quasi-isotropic flat panels of size 25.4 cm by 25.4, with a thickness between 0.15 cm and 0.20 cm, in-plane thermal conductivity, at 1900 K of 75 watt/m K or more, compression strength of 20 ksi (140 MPa) or more, tensile strength of 25 ksi (172 MPa) or more, tensile modulus of 20 Msi (140 GPa) or more, interlaminar tensile strength of 500 psi (3.5 MPa) or more, thermally stable to 2400 K. Information that is obtained will be used to prepare specifications and an Invitation for Bid or Request for Proposals to provide the material. Companies that are interested in proposing that their materials be considered when the specifications are being prepared are requested to submit (as a minimum) the following data, A general description of the material, to include fiber type, fabric construction, densification methods and the stabilization temperature. Projected values for: in-plane thermal conductivity, compression strength, tensile strength, tensile modulus and interlaminar tensile strength. Companies should also describe their facilities to construct large carbon-carbon composite structures, of complex curvature, of up to 1 m by 2 m by 3 m in dimension, and individual parts of up to 0.5 m by 1 m by 1.5 m. Companies are welcome to supply information on different sets of materials. Cost estimates and estimated delivery schedules should be supplied for each material set individually. The submitting of this product information is for planning and designing purposes and is not to be construed as commitment by the Government, nor will the Government pay for the information solicited. Respondents will not be notified of the results of the evaluation. Respondents deem fully qualified will be considered in any resultant solicitation. Firms responding should indicate whether they are a socially or economically disadvantaged business firm, an 8(a) firm, a small business, and/or woman-owned business. The Government reserves the right to consider a small business set-aside, or 8(a) set-aside base upon responses hereto. All responses shall be submitted to NASA Langley Research Center, Industry Assistance Office, Mail Stop 144, Hampton, VA 23681-0001 within 14 days from the date of publication of this announcement. In responding reference SS229. (0082)
