P.O. Box CN-17, Princeton, NJ 08543 L -- TOKAMAK FUSION TEST REACTOR (TFTR) TOKAMAK REMOVAL SOL RFP NO.

Administrator L -- TOKAMAK FUSION TEST REACTOR (TFTR) SHUTDOWN AND
REMOVAL (S&R). TFTR Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) experiments are currently
scheduled to be completed in September 1995. The D-T operations will
result in the TFTR machine structure becoming radiologically activated,
and plasma facing and vacuum components becoming contaminated with
Tritium. The resulting machine activation levels, after a two-year
cooldown period, will allow hands-on dismantling for external
structures, but will require semi-remote dismantling for the vacuum
vessel. The primary objective for the Shutdown and Removal (S&R)
Project is to ready the facility for construction of a new U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE) experimental fusion device by August 1999.
The S&R Project schedule calls for a two-year shutdown period during
which Tritium decontamination of the vacuum vessel, neutral beam
injectors, and other components will occur. Shutdown will be followed
by an 18 month period of removal operations for the tokamak itself. The
technical objectives of the S&R Project are to: safely dismantle and
remove components from the Test Cell Complex; package disassembled
components in accordance with applicable regulations; ship packages to
a DOE approved disposal or material recycling site; and develop
expertise using semi-remote disassembly techniques on a large scale
fusion facility. The TFTR Tokamak Removal effort includes tokamak
removal studies and engineering leading to completion of the final
design, and actual removal of the tokamak, neutral beamlines, vacuum
pumping ducts and tritium systems. Specific requirements are set forth
in RFP No. 95-049K. The anticipated release date for the solicitation
package is March 28, 1995. Subcontract award is to take place in
September, 1995, subject to the availability of funds. This notice is
not a solicitation of offers. Requests for a copy of the solicitation
package should be submitted to Michael Karl, Subcontract Administrator.
Only written requests for the solicitation package will be honored and
may be faxed to (609) 243-2021. Interested parties must confirm their
interest by responding to this notice (responses to previous CBD
announcements do not apply). Interested parties are also advised that
a TFTR S&R Reading Room has been established. The reading room contains
documents pertinent to the design and estimated cost of S&R efforts.
Please telephone Mr. G.R. Walton at (609) 243-3279 for appointments.
