this study is to compare lateral acceleration values (side friction
factors) based on passenger comfort in contemporary automobiles with
the American Association of State Highways & Transportation Officials
A Policy on Geometric Design of Highway and Streets (AASHTO) Green
Book) values used for the design of horizontal curves. Seatbelted and
unseatbelted passengers will be driven around horizontal curves and
asked to indicate at which point they feel uncomfortable. Given the
horizontal curve radius and the vehicle speed, the lateral acceleration
can then be calculated. The FHWA plans to negotiate a contract with
