COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF FEBRUARY 13,1995 PSA#1282University of California, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, P. O.
Box 808, L-643, Livermore, CA 94551 A -- FABRICATION OF PROTOTYPE SUPERCONDUCTING CABLE FOR THE TOKAMAK
PHYSICS EXPERIMENT (TPX) POC John Tennyson (510) 423-2383 The
University of California, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
(LLNL), seeks sources for the fabrication of Nb3Sn superconducting
cables for use in prototype toroidal field (TF) and poloidal field (PF)
coils for the Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX). These cables will be
supplied to an as-yet undesignated firm for encapsulation in
Incoloy-908 conduits. The resulting Cable-in-Conduit Conductors (CICC)
will be supplied to a Magnet Subcontractor for tooling checkout and
prototype coil production. In order to be considered responsive to the
RFP, prospective sources will be required to provide or have provided
proof of ability to produce strand to the TPX specification, including
test data as well as material on which confirmatory tests can be
carried out. Prospective sources should have personnel experienced in
the fabrication of superconductor strand and cable. Subject to the
availability of funding, LLNL intends to issue an RFP approximately
April 15, 1995 time frame for TF prototype cable to firms responding
with an expression of interest. TPX is designated as a national fusion
initiative by the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE). Hence, cost-sharing
arrangements and participation by the international community are not
being sought. Appropriate evaluation, consideration, and preference
will be given to U. S. industry in accordance with the provisions of
the Buy American Act. Submit your Expression of Interest to Mr. John
Tennyson by March 15, 1995. The total length of prototype TF cable
required is approximately 1.3 km, with an estimated mass of 3.2 tonnes.
The total length of prototype PF cable required is approximately 0.8 km
with an estimated mass of 0.7 tonnes. Facsimile and telephone responses
will not be accepted. This notice is to assist the University in
determining the potential for competition; no solicitation is currently
available. (0040) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0009 19950210\A-0009.SOL)
