The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) manages several networks in Southern
California for earthquake research. The networks presently consist of
178 remote short-period seismic stations comprising 282 components, 2
broad-band seismic stations, 8 strong-motion data loggers, and 10 GPS
stations, plus 30 radio receive sites for telemetry. The USGS has an
ongoing requirement for repair, calibration, modification, fabrication,
and installation of seismic instrumentation to support these networks.
It is expected the contractor will provide system technician, team
leader, and computer systems manager stationed at the USGS, Pasadena,
CA, and qualified field technicians stationed in Southern California.
Systems technician performs assembly, repair, and telemetry of
earthquake systems. Team leader identifies malfunctioning sites and
dispatches field technicians, and repairs instrumentations. Field
technicians repair stations on site if possible or return instruments
to Pasadena office. Computer systems manager supports 15 node Local
Area VAX cluster under OpenVMS operating system used for real-time
detection and analysis of earthquakes. Many stations sites are in
remote locations accessible only by 4-wheel-drive vehicle or
helicopter; USGS will provide 4WD vehicles and assist contractor in
arranging for use of Dept. of Interior-contracted helicopters. Expected
performance period of three years (including options) beginning 4/1/95.
All responsible firms may submit an offer which will be considered.
