University of California, Berkeley, California 94720 A -- APPLIED RESEARCH TO DEVELOP ELECTROCHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY FOR
ELECTRIC VEHICLES APPLICATIONS METAL HYDRIDES Sol. 4606510. Due 030295.

510/486-4380, Dr. K. Kinoshita, 510/486-7389, FAX 510/486-4260. The
Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL) is responsible for management of the
Exploratory Technology Research (ETR) Program, which is supported by
the Office of Transportation Technologies (OTT) of the U.S. Department
of Energy (DOE). The purpose of this project is to provide the
research base which supports DOE efforts to develop electrochemical
technology for electric-vehicle (EV) applications. LBL intends to issue
a Request for Proposal (RFP) to solicit R&D to identify and verify
through laboratory experiments the viability of improved electrolytes
and electrodes for advanced secondary batteries and capacitors that are
currently being developed for transportation applications, and
completely novel electrolytes and electrodes which could provide even
better performance characteristics. Specifically targeted are MH/NiOOH
batteries and capacitors because each requires significant
improvements in cost and performance to meet EV goals. It is expected
that multiple awards will be made for performance covering a two-year
period, with total funding for the RFP of about one million dollars.
