- TECHNOLOGY LICENSING OPPORTUNITY Revolutionizing Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling: Dimethyl Ether-Driven Extraction Technology A groundbreaking extraction process utilizing dimethyl ether (DME) for the efficient and sustainable recovery of electrolyte and rejuvenation of electrodes from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries. Overview:��� ����Traditional methods for recycling lithium-ion batteries have been hampered by complex hydrometallurgical based processes that are energy-intensive and costly from an operational standpoint. Currently, the industry struggles with economic viability due to these processing expenses, and immature supply chains for end of life batteries. The demand for a more efficient recycling process is growing, as lithium-ion batteries are ubiquitous in consumer electronics and electric vehicles. This technology's direct recycling method has the potential to revolutionize the sector, addressing the increasing concern for sustainable battery disposal and material recovery. Description:��� A new battery recycling technology, developed by researchers at INL, employs dimethyl ether, a polar organic solvent with a low boiling point, to extract electrolyte from spent lithium-ion batteries while also removing the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) from electrodes. This innovative approach allows for the recovery of electrolyte and the rejuvenation of electrodes under slightly elevated pressure (~5 atmospheres). The process is distinguished by its ability to recycle batteries with minimal disassembly and destruction of components, setting it apart from existing recycling methods.
