Description
Background Information: Current methods of discovery of physiological trends revolve around the measurement and analysis of oxygen saturation of the blood and the pulse rate, such as via a pulse oximeter. Specifically, oxygen saturation gives information about the amount of oxygen carried in the blood and can estimate the amount of oxygen in the blood without having to draw a blood sample. Physiological trends based upon oxygen saturation are inaccurate during high performance activities in the human body as more oxygen may be bound to hemoglobin thus resulting in less oxygen delivery to performing tissues. Carbon dioxide is a more accurate measure of physiological trends. In capnography, carbon dioxide exhaled from the body is in a tightly regulated range as measured by end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) levels. ETCO2 levels outside this range are indicative of muscular fatigue or weakness. The medical field has utilized large, fixed/wired capnography systems with nasal canula tubes to measure ETCO2 levels for patient diagnostics. Improved and minimally invasive capnography systems are needed to improve measurement of ETCO2 and offer insights into early detection of trends towards specific illnesses and diseases. Opportunity Description: MSTS possesses the intellectual property and know-how to develop a wireless capnography system and is seeking partners in the development and commercialization effort of the sensor system, associated electronics, data exfiltration, and sensor management software. Partners are sought to collaborate via Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) or commercial license agreement. MSTS is available to collaborate with non-federal entities (NFEs) including Business, Industry and Non-Profits, Universities, and Government Agencies to leverage a broad spectrum of talent and capabilities. Interested parties should contact MSTS Technology Partnerships and Intellectual Property Office via email with the subject line: Wireless Capnography Commercialization Opportunity.
