- USDA is committed to the vital work of transforming our?nation�s?food system to one that offers new market opportunities to small and mid-sized farming operations through a strengthened local and regional food system. ?USDA is also committed to ensure that this strengthened local and regional food system is developed in a way that?supports accessibility to USDA?financial and technical assistance programs?by?underserved producers and communities?through strategic partnerships that build capacity on the ground.? As part of this work, USDA may establish?agreements and programs?to help ensure that skilled personnel from state and local governments, Indian tribal governments, institutions of higher education and other eligible organizations may share and transfer expertise to help achieve the goals?of USDA�s Food Systems Transformation efforts?through the set up and execution of?a Food Systems Fellow Initiative that will support key local and regional programs.?? For?these programs to be successful, USDA will need to identify and support talented individuals with the key skills?and?food systems expertise to assist USDA in coordinating?locally and regionally based programs?with its partners and to?provide?technical assistance to?help?small and mid-sized producers to access new markets and leverage public resources?to expand and improve markets for domestically produced?products.?The volume of skilled talent needed to support these significant efforts can only be found through collaboration with?external?partners to make these programs happen across the country, drawing from local and regional talent to bridge?coordination and oversight activities alongside USDA employees.
