- Description
- The F-35 Lightning II Joint Program Office (JPO) is hosting a Power Thermal Management System (PTMS) Modernization Industry Day on 12 14 June in Crystal City, VA to solicit feedback from our industry partners regarding an initiative to formally develop and integrate an upgraded PTMS for the F-35 Air System. The capacity of the F-35 Air System must be increased as bleed air and power extraction to support the current PTMS is nearly double the specification value and is preventing F135 engines from achieving their designed overhaul intervals. Required future mission capabilities will exacerbate this issue requiring additional cooling and power beyond what the current PTMS was designed to supply. The PTMS Modernization is part of the Engine and PTMS Modernization program which seeks to address these issues by upgrading the cooling systems of the F-35, to include the Power and Thermal management System (PTMS) and ancillary systems such as the Fuel Thermal Management System, if required, and upgrading the F135 Propulsion System through the F135 Engine Core Upgrade (ECU) program. ECU will provide increased bleed air and heat exchanger capacity to support an upgraded PTMS to support and power additional aircraft mission system capabilities while returning engine life to specification values. It will also increase vertical lift capability for the F-35B to help offset projected aircraft weight increases. We welcome collaboration with our industry partners to critically review our requirements and discuss mutual issues and concerns relative to our technical requirements and acquisition strategy approach. In the afternoon of 12 June 2023, the JPO will brief your company on the status of the program, expectations for collaboration, and future planned strategies. On 13 June 2023 (and 14 June if needed), we will conduct one-on-one sessions with each vendor interested in discussing specific issues, recommendations and concerns relative to their companys interests. THE GOVERNMENT ONLY WANTS TO MEET WITH CONTRACTORS THAT CAN DELIVER A PTMS SOLUTION. WE ARE NOT MEETING WITH CONTRACTORS FOR OTHER REQUIREMENTS ON THE F-35. These closed-door sessions will last 30 to 60 minutes per company. Sessions will be scheduled ahead of time, so each company knows when to show up for their one-on-one. If your company is interested in participating in the Power Thermal Management System (PTMS) Modernization Industry Day, please contact Rebecca Magelitz at rebecca.l.magelitz@jsf.mil or Daniel Haertle at daniel.haertle@jsf.mil no later than 5 June 2023 for detailed information on the Industry Day venue and to schedule a one-on-one session with the government team. Due to the expected level of interest and time constraints, we are limiting company participation to just two representatives each.
