- Description
- STATEMENT OF WORK FORMAT Gas Chromatography Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer NASA Goddard Space Flight Center December 2022 PR: ##### BACKGROUND The Astrobiology Analytical Laboratory (AAL) in code 691 uses state-of-the-art commercial analytical instruments to investigate the distribution, origin, and formation processes of organic compounds in a variety of samples. These samples include extraterrestrial materials (e.g., carbonaceous meteorites or samples returned from NASA missions such as Stardust and OSIRIS-REx), terrestrial natural samples, and laboratory analogs. The acquisition of a gas chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC/TQMS) will add considerable capabilities (e.g., structural identification based on mass fragmentation patterns) necessary for the analysis of unknown trace organic species in complex mixtures beyond those possible with simple GC/MS. These increased capabilities will assist in the identification of the nature and sources of organic compounds that may have contributed to the origin of life, directly addressing section 6, subsection Q3.6 of NASAs Origins, Worlds, and Life: A Decadal Strategy for Planetary Science and Astrobiology 2023-2032 strategic plan to understand what established the primordial inventories of volatile elements and compounds in the inner solar system?. In addition, this instrument suite will support contamination testing for the OSIRIS-REx mission in FY23. This instrument suite will become a core component of the AAL and will combine with those already present to allow NASA Goddard to address several Space and Earth Science research questions. SCOPE OF WORK The GC/TQMS system and associated options shall be delivered to the Astrobiology Analytical Laboratory at NASA Goddard and installed. The technician shall perform the necessary work to set up the system and connect it to the electrical and gas supplies in the laboratory. REQUIREMENTS 1) A programmable gas chromatograph capable of split/splitless injections. The injector must feature constant flow and pressure modes, programmable flow and pressure modes, leak check and column evaluation, and a maximum temperature of 400C. 2) Electron impact and chemical ionization source for the mass spectrometer. 3) A mass spectrometer with a mass range of 1.2 1100.0 u., a resolving power of at least 20,000, and an acquisition of at least 125 mass spectra/second. The mass spectrometer must have a linear dynamic range of >10,000 and sensitivity of at least 100 fg octofluoronaphthalene. 4) The suite must come with two software licenses, for data analysis, the most recent NIST MS library, the ability to generate mass defect plots, van Krevelen, and Carbon Number vs. RDBE extensions with molecular formula classifications. 5) An Energy Star rated, 36 CFR part 1194 compliant, Windows PC to operate the software and the instrument. 6) The necessary pumps, tables, and gas purifiers to operate the system. 7) Installation must be included. 8) Familiarization training is required to train potential users of the instrument suite. 9) A one-year warranty is required. 10) The vendor must have a nationally recognized expertise with LC and MS design and an established history of instrument support and service. DELIVERABLES OR DELIVERY SCHEDULE Thermo Scientific shall deliver a complete TSQ9610-VPICI (triple quadrupole mass spectrometer system) with current Thermo GC TRACE 1610, Thermo AS 1610 Autosampler, and Thermo 1300 Split/Splitless injector. Thermo Scientific shall deliver 1 software package, 1 copy protection keys, Spectral Analysis Tools, both accessory and installation component packs, and computer. Computer, benches, electronic manuals, documentation, and copies of the supporting software shall be delivered within 180 calendar days after the award. The system shall be installed, calibrated, and certified by a trained Thermo Scientific technician. The technician shall train lab members in instrument operation and sample analysis during installation for two additional days after installation. Thermo Scientific shall provide and a 1-year warranty starting on the completion date of the installation followed by 2-year service agreement. PLACE OF PERFORMANCE The installation and future utilization of this instrument will be in the Astrobiology Analytical Laboratory at NASA Goddard. CONTACTS The following contacts will be responsible for requests and correspondence between Goddard and Thermo Scientific: PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE: Start: March 6, 2023 End: September 30, 2023
