- Description
- The United States Government, represented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is seeking quotations from qualified local entities to carry out a formative research for evaluation of effectiveness of mobile kraals in soil fertility management and crop productivity. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of using mobile kraals in soil fertility management as an alternative to conventional methods of using cattle manure from the kraal. The mobile kraal allows for direct fertilization of the soil and utilizes both cattle dung and urine. This research is informed by a concept promoted by The Savory Institutes Africa Centre for Holistic Management (ACHM). If proven effective compared to conventional methods, the mobile kraals would provide labor savings in soil fertility management as no digging and transportation of manure is involved. The research will focus on soil fertility and effect on crop productivity. The research will be done in areas where USAID is currently implementing food security and resilience activities which will allow the research site to be used as learning centers for neighboring communities. The results from this research will provide evidence on the impact of using mobile kraals for soil fertility management and help farmers and partners in decision-making on adapting this approach for enhancing crop production. This analysis will also make it possible to do a cost benefit analysis of investing in the required infrastructure to use this approach. Both BHA and FTF partners promote crop and livestock production in the current activities and this research will provide scientific evidence to inform decisions about adopting this approach. Please refer to the attached RFQ for more information.
