The user may also collect semi-quantitative geochemical data at the mm to micron scale. The SEM has been used by scientists in several science centers include: Volcano Science Center, Minerals, Earthquake Science Center, Water Resources, and Coastal and Marine. B. Background The SEM has been a fundamental tool for mineralogical, earthquake, and geochemical research at USGS Menlo Park for over 40 years. Instrument usages is at nearly 100% capacity, when fully functional. Significant SEM downtime would result in most of our users being unable to obtain necessary data. C.
