Description
Fleet Readiness Center East (FRC East), Cherry Point, NC, in collaboration with Craven County (FRC Easts Partnership Intermediary), is soliciting industry for information via a White Paper and follow-on Industry Day/Technology Scan Event regarding the following topic area: Small Tool(s) Tracking Capabilities: 1. Problem Description: a. FRC East has millions of tools utilized to repair aircraft throughout the facility that require inventorying at various required intervals and maintenance events to prevent foreign object debris (FOD) on the shop floor and/or within the aircraft, weapons systems, components, etc. Performing daily inventory of tool boxes, as well as locating tools missing from the tool boxes, requires significant time that can be better utilized in actually servicing aircraft and respective components to increase fleet readiness levels. b. Digital tracking via various technologies and solutions to include Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Real Time Locating System (RTLS), Global Positioning System (GPS), etc. with near and far field antenna tracking of both active and passive tags/chips/labels are all being tested at this time for larger assets and tools; however, there is a gap for tools and assets that FRC East categorized as either: i. Too small to mark/too small to tag ii. Ergonomically difficult to tag iii. Operationally or functionally difficult to tag iv. Tools prone to breaking v. Tools made from materials which require innovative bonding methods for tag adhesion c. Examples of tools considered in the aforementioned categories include, but are not limited to, the following: i. Tools that are roughly 1/16 and smaller ii. Gage pins & gage blocks iii. Calipers & other measurement devices iv. Drill bits, torque bits, reamers, etc. v. Chests and sets consisting of 100 or more tools considered too small to mark or tag which require a parent/child relationship 2. Capability Desires: a. FRC East is seeking an inventory tagging methodology that can be leveraged to: i. Uniformly track and locate various tools of all sizes, material composition, usage, etc. ii. Track and locate all pieces of a tool even if broken (i.e. drill bit, reamer, etc.) iii. Track and locate tools outside of the tool box within a production space iv. Avoid introducing unnecessary FOD in aircraft or component production areas as a result of tracking solutions b. If possible, integration into a middleware solution that can be leveraged to track larger tools, tool boxes, and assets. c. If technology is coating specific, coating must not be hazardous during operation to artisan and/or component, while also being durable in order to prevent/reduce the likelihood of contamination from coating. 3. Example Tool Images: See attached document.
