- Description
- Introduction nuCARIBU is an upgrade to the existing CAlifornium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) radioactive ion beam (RIB) facility. nuCARIBU will integrate neutron induced fission of actinide foils as the RIB production mechanism into the existing collection and separation equipment. The p-7Li reaction will produce neutrons, which will be thermalized in a moderator, and subsequently captured by the actinide foil, fission target. Fission fragments produced by the neutron capture reactions will be collected in a high purity He gas catcher. Figure 1 shows the main components of the nuCARIBU fission fragment production. Figure 1: The primary components of the nuCARIBU fission fragment production. A cyclotron will provide the protons with an average energy of 6.132 MeV. After extraction a quadrupole triplet will be used to properly focus the beam. The axis of the cyclotron will be 30 in (76.2 cm) higher than the target. A vertical magnetic chicane will deliver the proton beam to the needed height. The chicane specifications have been estimated based on the beam distribution and space available. Figure 2 highlights the major components of the transport system, and Figure 3 shows the detailed center trajectory of the beam through the chicane. Figure 2: The major components of the nuCARIBU proton accelerator and beamline. Figure 3: Central trajectory through the chicane shown with respect to the height of the mounting surface. Scope The Contractor shall perform all work necessary to design, prepare drawings, manufacture, assemble and factory test the magnets. Labor, equipment, and materials are the contractors responsibility. Upon completion, the contractor shall prepare and load the components included in the agreement for shipment and deliver to Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The vendor is responsible for the following equipment as specified below a magnetic chicane a magnetic quadrupole triplet stands for all equipment with appropriate adjustment nuCARIBU magnetic chicane dipole specifications Magnet type dipole Number of magnets 2 Configuration chicane Average beam rigidity 0.358 T-m Pole gap 6 cm Nominal field integral along central trajectory per dipole 0.435 T-m Field uniformity in good field area 50V or any DC conductor with a short circuit power >1kW) must be guarded to avoid incidental contact. Temperature interlocks Thermal switches shall be installed on every coil pancake or cooling circuit. Documentation Manuals Documentation shall include a technical description, operation specifications, operating procedures, test procedures, troubleshooting guide, parts list, acceptance test results, as-built electrical and plumbing schematics, and mechanical drawings. Labeling Equipment, including but not limited to cabling, gauges, and connections, must be labelled consistently with documentation. Quality Assurance All work performed shall be performed in accordance with a documented quality assurance program based upon a recognized standard such as ISO 9001:2015. The vendor shall provide a copy of its quality assurance program and any 3rd party certifications that have been achieved. The contractor shall design and manufacture the systems in accordance with the latest revision of national or international standards. The vendor shall provide records of all acceptance tests prior to shipment to Argonne. The records shall include a description of the tests performed, the measured results, the test equipment used with the last calibration date, and the signature of the person responsible for quality. The vendor shall provide designs for approval by Argonne prior to construction or assembly. Argonne will respond with approval, disapproval, or recommended alternative within 10 business days. Argonnes approval of the vendor drawings shall not relieve the vendor of the responsibility for any errors or omissions which may exist in the drawings. The vendor shall correct the drawings at no additional cost if errors or omissions are discovered. Any deviations from the specifications must be approved by Argonne prior to shipment to Argonne. The Laboratory or its authorized representatives shall be allowed access to the supplier and its sub-tier suppliers to monitor work associated with this Statement of Work. The Laboratory will be responsible for notifying the supplier at least 72 hours in advance of these activities. Audits, surveillances, verifications, inspections and/or tests made by the Laboratory, or its representative(s), shall not relieve the supplier of the responsibility to furnish items or services which conform to the requirements of the purchase order. Delivery and Acceptance Conditions Factory acceptance tests of all hardware shall be performed before shipment. Lifting attachment points and forklift-compatible bases shall be furnished with all equipment. Upon receipt of equipment a visual inspection will be performed. All damage noted shall be the responsibility of the vendor and its subcontractors. Upon successful completion of arrival inspection, Argonne shall perform operational tests to assure specifications are met. Argonne shall notify the vendor of all items that are not compliant with the specifications. Warranties The assemblies shall comply with Argonne warranties and policies. Refer to ANL Form ANL-71-COM ARGONNE TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR COMMERCIAL ITEMS.
