Description
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting market research to determine the availability of qualified businesses capable of providing a grinding mill to prepare soil and plant samples that pulverizes and homogenizes the collected material as described in the required features and specifications below. This sources sought announcement is not a request for quote or proposal and the Government is not committed to award of a purchase order or contract pursuant to this announcement. The information resulting from this market research is simply for planning purposes to assist the Government in determining its acquisition strategy. The Government will not pay for any costs incurred in the preparation of information for responding to this notice. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code - 333517 Machine Tools Manufacturing, size standard 500 employees apply to this announcement. All responsible sources may submit a brochure and/or technical specifications detailing the ability of their product to meet the required features and specifications included with this announcement. Responses to this announcement shall only be accepted through electronic mail addressed to thuot@usgs.gov and must be uploaded and received in their entirety no later than December 8, 2021 at 1700 PD. Responses submitted by hardcopy or the SAM web portal shall not be accepted or considered. Required features and specifications for Grinding Mill The U.S. Geological Survey, Southwest Biological Science Center, Canyonlands Research Station (CRS), conducts a variety of studies to determine the impact of climate change and land use on terrestrial ecosystems. To carry out these studies we run analyses to assess variables such as total carbon or nitrogen and microbial DNA. To conduct these analyses, we must prepare soil and plant samples using a grinding mill that pulverizes and homogenizes the collected material. The analyses are often time-sensitive and preparing samples has been a bottleneck to our efficiency therefore, we need a grinding mill with the largest capacity to process multiple samples at one time. Additionally, because of the specific needs of our analyses and materials we work with, we are looking for a mill with a sample output size in micrometers, that offers a variety of sizes and material of vials and grinding balls, and that can process wet or dry, or frozen samples. Specifications: Brand Name or equal to: Retsch Mixer Mill MM500 Capacity - 6 grinding stations that allow for 6 vials x 20 mL (sample material) or with adaptors, up to 50/60 smaller vials. Resolution - Frequency of 35 Hz that allows for grinding of samples down to 5 micrometers, has a fast grind time and high throughput. Sample type - Can grind dry, wet, or frozen samples Accessories - Range of jar sizes (1.5 to 50 mL) and available materials. Software - ability to store standard operating procedures, store cycle programs, and control of the device using a phone app.
