Description
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is upgrading the Advanced Light Source (ALS). As a part of the ALS-Upgrade (ALS-U) project, LBNL is building an Accumulator Ring (AR) consisting primarily of electromagnets and vacuum components and the related support systems that will need to be assembled, tested, aligned, and delivered to LBNL according to the ALS-U project schedule. The scope of work for this RFI encompasses the assembly of components required for the ALS upgrade Accumulator Ring. In total, twelve sectors, each consisting of seven subassemblies will need to be assembled, mechanically aligned, and tested. The sector subassemblies consist of four multi-magnet raft assemblies and three dipole bend magnet assemblies. These assemblies will be mounted onto stands using a 6-strut system. The magnets on the rafts will be positioned with a combination of studs and struts for alignment adjustments. LBNL will provide work instructions and BOMs which include prescribed part and serial numbers to be used to track assemblies and subassemblies. The four raft assemblies consist of either three or four electromagnets, with a straight, multi-chambered ultra-high vacuum (UHV) assembly that will be installed within the center of the magnets. The three dipole magnet assemblies consist of one dipole magnet and a single, curved ultra-high vacuum chamber assembly that will be installed within the magnet assembly. Figures 1-6 show a completed sector, examples of each raft assembly, and an example of a dipole assembly. All raft assemblies are supported by a raft weldment that is determined by the rafts assigned sector. A typical raft assembly consists of an Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) chamber which includes an inline ion pump and beam position monitors (BPMs); Raft assemblies 1 and 4 include four electromagnet assemblies each, and Raft assemblies 2 and 3 include three electromagnet assemblies each. Each of the 36 dipole assemblies consist of one large bend electromagnet and a UHV assembly with support fixtures that are secured to the electromagnet body. All raft and dipole assemblies have one low conductivity water (LCW) supply manifold and one LCW return manifold, and will include all fittings and hoses required to be connected to the magnets and UHV components.
