Description
Special Notice DARPA-SN-21-27 Special Program Announcement for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) / Biological Technologies Office (BTO) Research Opportunity: Fatigue Assessment via Breath (FAB) I. INTRODUCTION This announcement describes a research thrust, entitled ""Fatigue Assessment via Breath"" (FAB), that will focus on identifying compounds in human breath that strongly correlate with an acute or chronic state of fatigue. This solicitation is released under the current DARPA BTO Office Wide Broad Agency Announcement (BAA), HR001121S0025, entitled ""Biological Technologies,"" which can be found at https://beta.sam.gov/opp/dfe93a5637fc419a8ea392ee949f9c79/view. It is highly encouraged that proposers submit proposal abstracts (2 pages maximum), which will be reviewed to determine whether or not a full proposal submission is encouraged. The requirements for the abstract and full proposal submission, evaluation, and award of any resulting contracts will ultimately be subject to the terms described in HR001121S0025. The purpose of this announcement is (1) to draw the attention of the scientific community to the FAB study topics, (2) to initiate dialogue and teaming that will lead to team-based abstract/proposal submissions to address the FAB study topics, (3) to share the planned timetable for the submission of abstracts and government feedback concerning said abstracts, and (4) to share the planned timetable for the submission of full proposals. Proposal Abstract Due Date: May 24, 2021, 4:00 PM EDT Full Proposal Due Date: July 6, 2021, 4:00 PM EDT TOPIC DESCRIPTION This special notice is designed to solicit abstracts and proposals to extract and identify compounds in breath that correlate with a non-disease attributable fatigued state in humans vs. non-disease, non-fatigued human controls. Fatigue state will be stratified by cause of fatigue; specifically, performers will compare breath data between and among three different etiologies or causes of fatigue. These causes of fatigue will be 1) sleep deprivation, 2) fatigue due to physical exertion, and 3) fatigue due to mental exertion. The resulting studies will demonstrate the technical feasibility for the use of compounds in human breath to objectively assess cause, degree, or effect of normal, non-illness attributable fatigue. SEE ATTACHMENT FOR MORE DETAILS.
