- The purpose of this special notice is to announce a Save the Date the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Office of Acquisition, Logistics, and Construction (OALC) is sponsoring a Virtual Reverse Industry Day Suicide Prevention Grand Challenge Summit via virtual platform during the month of February 2021. VA is committed to serving and supporting the well-being of all Veterans. Many Veterans who die by suicide do not have record of contact with VHA services in the year of or year prior to their death. Key Areas of Focus Increase identification of and suicide risk screening for non VHA Veterans in the community. Increase early suicide intervention and prevention services in the community. Increase lethal means safety storage options and interventions within the community. Panelist: TBD. Objectives Better understand Veterans at risk who do not receive health care from VA. Incorporate specific at-risk, minority, or disadvantaged Veteran populations, including: Women Veterans, new Veterans (those who are planning transition or have transitioned in the last 1-3 years), Veterans ages 55 & over, Veterans ages 18-34, American Indian, Alaska Native and African American Veterans. Normalize warning signs, symptoms and motivate help-seeking behaviors related to mental health, substance abuse and emotional crisis. Improve prediction of risk to find signals among vulnerable populations of Veterans and optimize intervention strategies for those identified through healthcare records, social media platforms and other large data sets. Increase evidenced based treatment options in the VA and communities across the nation by training a nation of health care providers informed by the 2019 VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines. Help Veterans maintain social connection to others during transition to civilian life, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Increase public knowledge of simple steps to store firearms, medications, alcohol, access to high buildings and bridges can save lives. Explore options for taking the three winning solutions from the 2017 VA Gun Safety Matters Challenge (e.g., build prototypes and make them available for firearm owners to use).
