- Description
- In order to effectively execute the strategic direction, goals, and objectives for a more adaptive force with unique and tailorable options, CDRUSSOCOMs number one modernization priority includes a family of munitions with increased range, survivability, and Next-Generation target effects for sea, air, ground, subterranean and space. In pursuit of these priority capabilities, and increased support to all levels of engineering and breaching aspects across USSOCOM Components, PM-SL has coordinated a Working Group with End Users, Instructors, Government Technical Subject Matter Experts and N8/G8/J8 representatives from all Services/Components to identify operational capability gaps for multi-layer, in-depth, hardened structures, and mega-city and/or subterranean engagements. In addition, the Working Group is defining the capability attributes and standards to reduce environmental risk and/or threats such as, Soldier load (time and weight), and Exposure (overpressure, time on target, human error). This effort includes canvasing industry to understand existing material solutions and what future capabilities are realistic. As such, the next Working Group Meeting will be held on a Range Complex to allow the different Services and Industry Partners to demonstrate available capabilities. Lastly, while Key Instructors and Personnel are collocated on a Range facility, New Equipment Training (NET) of newly qualified breaching and demolition items will be conducted in support of fielding to Special Operations Forces (SOF). Due to restrictions of initiating non-qualified materials on Government/Military breaching ranges, an offsite training location is required to explore these emerging technologies and/or technical applications that have the potential to provide solutions for future SOF capabilities and mitigate gaps. However, there are criteria based on both the scope of planned activities (see below) as well as adhering to programmatic efficiencies and travel considerations due to COVID-19: *Proper ATF licenses, zoning & permits *A Net Explosive Weight up to 100lbs for Surface demolitions shots on targets. *Examples of Target materials are steel doors, fiberglass doors, Wood doors, and rolled homogeneous armor (RHA) plates. *Heavy equipment on site to move target materials around. *Ability to view each demolition shot from approved blast bunker and visual recording devices for immediate playback of actual effects on target. * Bailment & Pre-Positioning Ordnance - Capable to receive and store demolitions material. (License through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives) with approved Security. *Classroom and/or meeting facility to support up to 50 PAX *Centrally located along Eastern U.S. Given that majority of attendees are from Ft. Bragg, NC, being within driving distance (<60 miles) of Ft. Bragg would be most efficient from a travel cost and also minimize the amount of personnel traveling, lowering the risk of exposure to COVID-19.
