- Fabric Worker for Southeast Regional Maintenance Center Sources Sought TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE REQUIREMENT: The Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC) at Naval Station Mayport, FL requires contractor services of one industrial experienced fabric worker onsite to support fabrication of flight deck and trunk safety nets for various classes of US Navy ships.� Efforts/Duties of the position include: Fabricate three (3) flight deck and/or trunk safety nets per day; materials and equipment to be provided by the Government. Measure area, objects, or machinery that canvas is to be installed on. Sketch patterns of items to be fabricated on heavy paper or cloth, laying out work, as necessary, circles, angles, curves, and irregular shapes. Cut patterns and all parts of the item determining thickness and gauge of material needed. Sew/bond parts of canvas, leather, nylon and synthetic materials together. Replace hardware on canvas and webbing. Attach tack buttons by clinching tack and buttons to material with hammer and wood block, or by fastening with tack-button machine. Prepare and circular-stich iron rings. Insert brass grommets using die set, lead block, hollow steel cutter and punch, fastener anvil, riveting hammer, and wood mallet. Insert eyelets, attach tabular or belt rivets to canvas and webbing items. Punch holes and insert grommets into materials using a grommet machine or hand punch. Cut out and attach various types of nylon billets to canvas equipment. Affix rolled end, angled short end, and wide webbing straps. Fabricate stitched grip and rope reinforced strap handles. Repair worn or damage nylon and canvas to attachments. Hand sew nylon using saddler's stich, box stitch or running stitch. Use tools such as stitch maker, awl, fid, and needles. Machine sews items made of nylon and canvas. Fasten pieces of nylon and canvas together and join edges for desired appearance. Finish edges and surface of to include replacing missing or damaged fasteners and or attachments. Clean, maintain, and make necessary adjustments to applicable tools and power sewing machines. Read and understand blue prints, instructions and specifications Work in an industrial environment. Operate standard high industrial sewing machinery to perform operations in the Machine Operation Group. Performs other machine sewing operations, dependent on the workload Performs non-sewing functions such as markings and trimming on an as needed basis Work without supervision EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must possess experience or training to fully operate an industrial sewing machine, take measurements, make patterns and layouts, mark, cut, fit and sew or cement parts together, using hand or power tools, equipment and knowledge of fabrics and constructions methods. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must possess specialized experience, which includes at least 18 months experience or training reading and interpreting designs, blueprints, technical manuals, drawing individual patterns, making alterations or adjustments to difficult patterns. Have experience computing dimensions, lay out circles, angles, curves and irregular shapes; experience planning, laying out, altering and constructing different, new or one-of-a-kind items; experience applying mathematical principles such those used in the calculation and measurement of fabric; experience operating, repairing, and maintaining sewing machines, punch presses and other related equipment; and experience using a variety of hand and power tools and measuring devices such as flexible measuring tapes, straight and curved rules, protractors, compasses, dividers, squares, patterns and templates.
