- Description
- The Office of Naval Research (ONR) supports science and technology innovation by funding and providing collaborative areas by which authorized experts inside and outside the Department of the Navy (DoN) can present research, discoveries, developmental schedules and processes; and enabling review, discussion and the merging of ideas to necessary to provide solutions to technical issues faced by the DoN. The Office of Naval Research (ONR), Performance Improvement and Information Management (PIIM) division is charged with managing all ONR Headquarters and Field Site Information Technology (IT) support for approximately 1,200 users. PIIM is responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of the headquarters and remote site information technology (IT) hardware and software access systems, telecommunications and wireless capabilities to support ONR mission objectives. Likewise, ONR-Global CIOs must manage the IT infrastructure in place at other remote offices. In addition, PIIM is also responsible for the continuous improvement of all ONR business processes aimed at increasing efficiencies and reducing the administrative workload and reducing operational and business costs. ONRs Legacy Network and Business Systems & Applications are utilized by approximately 1,200 users. The majority of business systems are automated and therefore require the network and access to applications/systems to operate at a reasonable level. At this time, ONR does not possess a robust network monitoring tool to measure network availability, performance, and system access and that covers all the primary network components: bandwidth, security (firewalls), wireless, switches, and routers. Additional software (and minor equipment separately purchased) is required to provide this monitoring capability. Business decisions to resolve degraded network performance, if any, will be made based on the results of this software.
