- Description
- Repair Pope Airfield Runway, PAAF North Carolina:� The scope of work for this project is for the removal and replacement of existing electrical equipment, including airfield lighting and airfield lighting vault equipment and the reconstruction of Runway 05-23, PAAF, NC full depth with Portland Cement Concrete pavement and Hot Mix Asphalt shoulders. Fort Bragg is located within multiple urban areas with several PCC and HMA producers and contractors.� Availability of quality materials and workmanship is not expected to be an issue.� A desktop study of the suitability of the local aggregate sources to meet the UFGS specifications will be completed as the design progresses.� The desktop study may not be able to gauge the ability of the local aggregate suppliers to meet project demand as this ability is contingent upon several factors, such as current workload and workload at the time this project is constructed.� State highway construction may be at a peak or a lull, which could negatively or positively impact the ability of the suppliers to meet demand.� Attempts will be made to determine the ability of supply to meet the project demand.� The contractor should be encouraged at the time of contract award to begin stockpiling suitable aggregates at the proposed batch plant site in order to meet project demand. The electrical components required for this project are typically manufactured on demand, with several items needing long lead time, such as airfield regulators and approach lighting equipment.� Typically, these items are available for delivery within six (6) to eight (8) weeks of ordering after shop drawing review and approval.� Components known to be dropped from manufacturing support will not be specified for this project.� For example, the BRITE controller often used for landing zone (assault strip) lighting to reduce the number of circuits required to operate the lighting in both covert and overt modes is being discontinued by the manufacturer with support ending in approximately five years.� This system will not be specified for use by the project to ensure the airfield has a final product with a long manufacturer support structure life. To complete the work at the most accelerated pace, the contractor would be expected to work 6 or 7 days per week, 10 to 14 hours per day, with multiple demolition, electrical, and paving crews working simultaneously.� Work inside the airfield lighting vault would also run concurrently with the runway work such that the runway circuits are powered from the reconfigured airfield lighting vault when it is re-opened.
