- Description
- In general, a BAK-15 is a net type aircraft arresting net barrier used primarily for emergency recovery (arrestment) of USAF non-prop trainer aircraft. Such arrestments generally occur during aborted takeoffs or during instances of internal aircraft malfunction during the landing roll. When the net barrier system (i.e., the BAK-15) is complemented with a hook cable to also allow engagement by tail hook equipped aircraft, and it is referred to as the BAK-15 62NI. In this configuration, a hook cable is positioned approximately 65-feet in advance of the BAK-15, and is mechanically interconnected to the energy absorbers and net barrier. This distance provides arresting potential for tail hook equipped aircraft, and, if successfully engaged, would provide the decelerating loads through the aircraft tail hook (braking loads transferred via the BAK-15 would be negligible). This function is important since the textile webbings of the BAK-15 net tend to cause, at a minimum, wing leading edge damage during arrestments.
