- Description
- Background Information: To support the needs of the geothermal industry as well as for fossil energy drilling, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) has developed a high temperature high pressure (HTHP) chemical sensor for iodide, chloride and pH capable of withstanding the harsh downhole environmental conditions. The sensor package has been shown to maintain sensitivity and selectivity at the temperatures and pressures commonly found in geothermal environments. These sensors provide a means to obtain electrochemical measurements that help understand downhole in-situ chemistry. This sensor system, described in US Patent 9,863,243 and US Patent application 15/889,118, is a ruggedized package with HTHP electrodes to provide real-time measurement of pH as well as concentrations of iodide and chloride concentration. The onboard signal conditioning and acquisition system is implemented on all high temperature electronics components.to enable real-time, long term measurements of pH/pI/pCl from high enthalpy fluids. Furthermore, the packaging of the system is stable in HTHP environments found in geothermal wells. Opportunity Description: SNL is seeking licensees to commercialize the sensor technology described in US Patent 9,863,243 and US patent application 15/889,118. Understanding geothermal and fossil energy downhole chemistry is important to performing more accurate assessments of the status and production of wells. Available chemical sensors can not function in the harsh, high temperature environment and the Sandia sensor has been specifically designed and tested to operate in this environment. Sandia is seeking a licensee to make this technology available to the geothermal industry. Sandia is seeking to commercialize this technology for the benefit of the United States. Potential Applications: - Geothermal - Oil & Gas well assessment - Water quality monitoring for Nuclear industry Keywords: Chemical sensor, geothermal, high temperature sensor, well assessment Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.
