Description
Justification & Approval The U.S Naval Medical Research Unit No. 6 (NAMRU-6) in Lima, Peru is searching for sources in the field of research on tropical infectious diseases, for a surveillance study of malaria and leishmaniasis in Peru with a special focus in the Madre de Dios. This study is funded by The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, Division of Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System Operations (AFHSC-GEIS) and aims to study the distribution of malaria and leishmaniasis in endemic regions and assess changes in prevalence. This acquisition requires the institution to carry out coordination, obtainment of study authorization from local health facilities and local IRB approval to perform the study; recruitment and training of personnel for performing the study; collect epidemiological data and biological samples; label, store and ship samples to NAMRU-6 Lima. The contract will have a performance period of 6 months with optional extension period for two additional months. It is the intent of NAMRU-6 to award this requirement to Cayetano Heredia University (UPCH) in Peru. UPCH is a leading Peruvian University with a long-standing line of research in tropical diseases. UPCH is the only institution able to meet our research needs in Peru with active research in arthropod borne diseases such as Zika, Dengue, leishmaniasis and Malaria. Furthermore, UPCH is conducting collaborative work with NAMRU-6 during the current year showing high professional standards, generating high quality research, and accrued the necessary level of experience to successfully run the multiple activities that comprise the study.
