Statement of Need for a Grossing Workstation A grossing workstation is used to examine tissue specimens that have been surgically removed from patients. Tissue specimens are taken out of specimen jars containing 10% formalin and place on the cutting board section of the workstation where they are grossly examined. This means, they are inspected with the bare eye to give a gross description to include the size (giving dimensions), color and the stage and margin status of surgically removed tumors. Then sections of the tissue are cut and placed into tissue cassettes and sealed so that the tissue can be processed. Because the pathologist or pathologist s assistant is dealing with formalin, it is important that the grossing workstation has back draft ventilation designed to safely remove formaldehyde fumes and other hazardous chemical vapors and ducted properly to the outside. It is also important to have a safety shield to work behind due to working with tissue samples containing blood and other body fluids. Further, because a pathologist or pathologist s assistant is standing for long periods of time at this workstation, it is important for it to be ergonomically correct. That is why the elevating feature of the grossing station is so important. It allows the workstation to adjust for the height of the person performing the work. However, if not installed correcting with corrugated flexible venting that can adjust, the elevation feature will not work. Salient Characteristics for Mopec Maestro Grossing station, part # MB1060R (Brand Name) with various additions: \ AX039 HITCH WRITING LEDGE MB1021 MAESTRO GARBAGE DISPOSAL AX049 LIGHT BAR Ventilated Tissue Storage System The ventilated tissue storage system allows for the storage and transport of tissues. It is a storage cabinet that contains a portable rolling rack with shelving. The ventilation duck is on top of the cabinet. The tissues that are stored are in containers of 10% formalin. College of American Pathologists require that tissues e kept for 2 weeks after date of the final report was released. This is quite a lot of specimens all being stored in the formalin. That is why you need to provide for ventilation. The cabinet must be equipped with a self-adjusting floor section to allow for easy spill clean-up. Internally, there must be a 5-tier shelving rack to store the tissues. The rack must be in rubber casters that are 5 diameter to allow for transport of the samples if needed.
