Description

The Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC) is considering two dredging projects as follows: 1. St. Lawrence River at Galop Island and Crossover Island: ("dredging") of existing rock outcrops ("high spots") in the St. Lawrence River channel bottom remaining from original channel dredging at two locations, one in the vicinity of Galop Island near Ogdensburg, New York, estimated at 41,715 square yards (5,500 cubic yards) and the other near Crossover Island in the vicinity of Oak Point, New York, estimated at 915 square yards (244 cubic yards). The amount of cut varies, up to about 1 foot. The character of the channel bottom in the proposed dredging areas is solid bedrock which may have small incidental amounts of overlying gravel and cobbles. The channel to be dredged carries commercial and pleasure craft traffic and the work will be carried out in the navigation lanes. 2. Wiley Dondero Canal: To accommodate the increased draft of a new tug, the SLSDC plans to deepen the mooring areas at two locations: one at the Eisenhower Lock spare gate assembly area and the other at the SLSDC Marine Base at 251 Fregoe Road, Massena, NY. This work involves the removal of approximately 500-700 cubic yards at each location (1,000-1,400 cubic yards) total) of unconsolidated sediments and soils in a cut of up to about 3 feet. This material will be disposed of at SLSDC owned upland disposal site. The work is outside the navigation channel.
