- Description
- The Office of Naval Research, Code 34, requests information on specific capabilities to support an initiative to develop advanced technologies for treating poly-traumatic injuries using Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC). Poly-traumatic injuries, which include hemorrhagic shock, as well as soft tissue and musculoskeletal damage, remain a leading cause of potentially survivable mortality in the military and civilian sectors. The increasing use of explosive devices in combat has contributed to a rise in severe poly-traumatic injuries as explosions were the cause for 72% of those who died of wounds during Operations Iraqi Freedom / Enduring Freedom. Mortality is influenced by injury, severity, blood loss, and resulting pathophysiologic derangements such as metabolic acidosis, coagulopathy, and maladaptive immune responsiveness. Studies show 25% of potentially survivable deaths during the above conflicts was due to extensive blood loss. In addition, ACL injuries among U.S. military service members are estimated to occur at a rate 10 times higher than for the U.S. population as a whole. Since these injuries generally affect young, active individuals, the long-term impact of early-onset osteoarthritis is of great concern for the active and veteran military populations. The leading cause of disability for active military is musculoskeletal injuries “ with disorders of the knee as one of the highest causes of long term dysfunction.
