Description
Figure 1. Temperature Values Opportunity : Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract no. DE-AC52-07NA27344 (Contract 44) with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to further develop and commercialize its innovative multi-channel Pyrometer that allows non-contact temperature measurements down to 800 °K on the microsecond scale. Background : Accurate and precise temperature determinations are among several important factors in obtaining reliable thermodynamic data for materials from experiments under extreme pressures and temperatures. The ability to measure transient temperatures less than 1000 °K without touching the target remains a challenge. Description : LLNL researchers have designed and tested performance characteristics for a multichannel pyrometer that works in the NIR from 1200 to 2000 nm. A single datapoint without averaging can be acquired in 14 microseconds (sampling rate of 70'000/s). In conjunction with a diamond anvil cell, the system still works down to about 830 °K. Advantages : It has a relatively small footprint, is portable, only requires low voltage power supplies and can report temperatures down to 800 °K on the millisecond scale or faster. A single datapoint without averaging can be acquired in 14 microseconds (sampling rate of 70’000/s). In conjunction with a diamond anvil cell the system still works down to about 830 °K. Use of photomultiplier tubes requiring power supplies with several hundred Volts is avoided. The use of detectors working in the NIR ensures superior performance. Potential Applications : Temperature measurements of very small stationary objects (~ thousands of an inch) on a millisecond scale or faster based on detecting black-body light in the NIR from ~ 1200 to 2000 nm. Development Status: The pyrometer has been interfaced several times with a laser heating system. Testing was done in conjunction with another experimental configuration and X-ray diffraction. The system was able to measure temperatures of tunable blackbody sources down to less than 1000 °K. LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPO website at https://ipo.llnl.gov/resources for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Multi-Channel Pyrometer should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Innovation and Partnerships Office P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 389-18 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Multi-Channel Pyrometer technology.
