- The U.S. Department of State is supporting the Merida Initiative, an on-going, long-term agreement between the U.S. and Mexican Governments to detect, deter, prevent, and mitigate criminal activity in Mexico and its effects in both Mexico and the United States. Part of the Merida Initiative is to modernize equipment and technological resources of canine units, through the provision of canines, Basic canine handler training, along with advanced medical, tactical and communications equipment to the states police agencies.
