- STATEMENT OF WORK STEAM QUALITY TESTING SERVICE Purpose: Solving stains, solids, and wet packs issues with steam sterilizers in SPS Gainesville Medical Centers. Vendor works together with SPS and Facilities Engineering to eliminate stains, black solids and wet pack causes from the steam side. Elimination of wet packs saves cost, time, effort, and reduces risk. Reduced repairs and instrument reprocessing will improve productivity, service, and quality. Scope of Work: 1. Verify sterilizer drainage performance with electronic instrumentation. 2. Measure condensate return temperature to check for evidence of back pressure. Inspect return system. 3. Electronically verify steam system drainage and measure insulation performance at: a) steam supply piping (to boiler room, power house, or district heat valve), b) intermediate 50-60 psi reducing station piping, c) run out piping, and d) sterilizer take-off piping. 4. Inspect entire steam supply for drain legs that might be forgotten, missing, disconnected, re-routed, clogged, have failed (or worn out) valves, or be installed incorrectly. 5. Test steam quality at access point, with a direct (dead weight) calorimeter. The test requires a sampling tube (Vendor provides) inserted in the steam supply pipe. A few pounds of steam are condensed in a water reservoir. Weight and temperature changes allow the steam quality to be calculated (also called dryness fraction in the standards). Steam quality test methodology is described in the 2010 version of ANSI/AAMI ST79 Comprehensive guide to steam sterilization and sterility assurance in health care facilities. 6. Measure dynamic steam pressure (and steam quality again if needed) during a steam load. 7. Check boiler operation records and procedures for TDS control, bottom and surface blow-down performance. Deliverables: Review all findings before leaving the site, or as directed. Will promptly (48-72hours) deliver a written report documenting testing and inspection results. Corrective action steps and follow-up requirements must be clearly described. Equipment and Access: Must bring own cameras, stethoscopes, thermometers, gloves, and fittings. Facility ladders, some buckets (and sometimes misc. fittings) for steam quality measurements may be available. Access to all mechanical spaces from the sterilizers to the boiler room or steam supply will be available.
