- RFQ To provide Fiber Optic training for 30 people to result in participants receiving a Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) designation from the Fiber Optic Association (FOA). This fiber optics training program shall include but not be limited to: • Fiber Optic transmission theory • Fiber optic network design considerations • Fiber optic safety practices (glass, solvents, epoxies & laser exposure) • Benefits of fiber optic cabling vs. copper cabling • Basic components that comprise a fiber optic network • Various types of optical fibers/cables and their applications • Industry standards and the National Electric Code (NEC) as it pertains to fiber • Single-mode fiber characteristics • Multi-mode fiber characteristics • Optical Dispersion characteristics • Signal propagation • Fiber optic cable types and proper installation methods • Fiber optic connector styles and their use (form factors) • Introduction to fiber optic hand tools for termination • Various cable connector styles including: ST, SC, FC, LC, MTRJ, MU, etc. • Fiber optic troubleshooting techniques, i.e. Visual Fault Locator, etc. • Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) types & features • OTDR Testing considerations Fiber optics training program shall include but not be limited to: • Hands-On Cable preparation lab for various cable styles • Hands-On Installation lab for assorted connectors on various cable types • Hands-On simulated troubleshooting of fiber optic networks • Hands-On use of 3M Hot Melt Termination Kit 6366 o Fiber optic connectors ST, SC and FC • Hands-On use of AFL/Fujikura 70S Fusion Splicer o Fiber Optic Pigtail splicing o Fiber Optic single fiber splicing Training is to be held at: NASA/Glenn Research Center 21000 Brookpark Road Cleveland OH 44135-3127
