INTRODUCTION - Statement of Need The Green River Ferry Crossing is located at milepost 1.31 between Green River Ferry Road South (RIP route 0013) and Green River Ferry Road North (RIP route 0014) about 2 miles southwest from the Mammoth Cave National Park (MACA) visitor center. The purpose of the project is to reconstruct the existing ramps to facilitate ferry operation during low water conditions and to prevent vehicles from bottoming out when entering or exiting the ferry. The project will also protect the historic walls that are adjacent to both sides of both ferry approaches. The proposed work for this project includes reconstructing the profile of the existing ramps to prevent trailers from bottoming out when approaching the ferry, extending both ramps approximately 30 feet further into river, protecting existing historic stone walls adjacent to ferry ramps, drainage improvements, scour protection, and other incidental work related to the ramp reconstruction. The cost for this project is estimated to be between $1,000,000 and $3,000,000. 4. DESCRIPTION OF WORK • Reconstruct approximately 200' of existing Portland cement concrete ferry ramp approaches at the Green River Ferry along Green River Ferry Road within Mammoth Cave National Park and extend each ramp approximately 30' further into the river. • Dredge approximately 1,300 CY of material from the river bottom. • Protect the existing historic walls during construction. • Complete approximately 2,000 LF of full depth asphalt pavement shoulder widening (2' outside of current edge of pavement, 1.5' inside current edge of pavement and an additional 1,200 LF of shoulder widening tapers along Mammoth Cave Parkway. Key Restrictions • Only place cofferdams along one side of the river at a time. • USGS peak flow and elevation information can be found using the following link: https://nwis.waterdata.usgs.gov/ky/nwis/uv?cb_00010=on&cb_00055=on&cb_00065=on&format=gif_default&site_no=03309000&period=&begin_date=2017-11-10&end_date=2018-05-21 • Single lane closures with flaggers are allowed for the shoulder widening work along Mammoth Cave Parkway, but the lane for only one shoulder hardening location may be closed at a time. Delays for Mammoth Cave Parkway users cannot exceed 5 minutes. Schedule • The estimated NTP for this project is 3/4/19.
