The concept is to create an experiential learning tool that would engage employees in a learning process; simulate and illustrate dynamics that are common to complex systems, and promote an understanding of key systems principles in a way that enables people to gain insight about their relevance. Since its initial release in 1992, simulation has met diverse learning needs and served a wide range of objectives beyond this initial purpose. The VA Michael E. DeBakey Medical Center setting is familiar to nearly everyone. People who work in other industries or live in diverse cultures readily understand the core processes and interdependencies that simulation represents and find them universally relevant. Goal: The Friday Night at the ER simulation is versatile- useful to employees with varied levels of knowledge, adaptable to suit a variety of specific objectives and suitable with small or large groups. Improve collaboration across care/service lines, prepare groups for a major change initiative, clarify success factors and support leadership development in areas such as self-directed work teams, customer satisfaction, conflict management, change management and team building. Description: The BREAKTHROUGH LEARNING offers a solution to prepare leader(s) to successfully use the Friday Night at the ER simulation with an opportunity to practice concepts and procedures, as well as provide an opportunity to practice analysis, problem solving, fault detection and correction, and decision-making within instructional environments that appropriately align with desired learning outcomes. This approach is to get leaders or training staff up to speed with best practices. The Friday Night at the ER experience has proven useful for meeting a variety of team- building needs. The shared experience can bring together individuals who have not worked together. Certainly, one of the fundamental principles taught by the simulation is that individuals in a system are interdependent, and individual performance is enhanced by teamwork.
