Description
The FAA is responsible for aviation weather observation services at designated airports throughout the United States, including remote sites in Alaska and Puerto Rico. Since March 1995, the FAA has satisfied this responsibility through the use of the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), or the Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS), FAA employees, and Contract Weather Observation personnel. Presently, the Contract Weather Observation (CWO) program utilizes 9 small business contractors, to provide weather observation services at 136 contract sites in FAA-owned or FAA-leased locations. The following summary represents the CWO locations aligned within the three (3) Service Areas. They will be further divided into groups. - Eastern Service Area contains approximately 51 sites within the following states: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. - Central Service Area contains approximately 42 sites within the following states: Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin. - Western Service Area contains approximately 43 sites within the following states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, and Hawaii.
