Description
SOURCES SOUGHT NOTICE FOR: GEMINI Avoidance System (Brand Name or Equal) The Minneapolis VA Medical Center (Research) has a requirement to purchase a complete rodent Gemini Active Avoidance System (Brand name or equal). This system will be used for ongoing cognitive behavior measurements used in studying neuroscience and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer s disease and Gulf War Illness. The system will include all hardware, software and computer (with all cables). This procurement will allow the Minneapolis VA to establish and maintain an essential capability for neuroscience research. The device requested is used to test active and passive avoidance behavior in mice cognitive behavior and learning in rodents (mice and rats). The system should consist of a shuttle box separated into two compartments by a divider/opening that a rodent can freely pass through. Within the box there is a light, small speaker, wire cage flooring and photo beams. Brand Name or Equal System includes the specifications below: GEMINI AVOIDANCE SYSTEM SHOCK ITEM QTY DESCRIPTION 1 1 GEMINI AVOIDACNE SYSTEM SHOCK (includes: control software, One Test Station with mouse grid floor, user s manual, and all required cables and connectors (USB Interface, Max 8 stations) 2 1 GEMINI GRID FLOOR 3 1 SHOCK LEVEL TESTER 4 1 CONFIGURED COMPUTER LAPTOP (high performance laptop PC, and driver software installed and fully tested Unique Brand Name or Equal Characteristics Desired: The system is designed for Passive Avoidance, Active Avoidance and Learned Helplessness testing. It cab used for both mice and rats. Grids can be interchanged without the need of a biomedical technician; grids are low maintenance and are resistant to corrosion and warping. System can accommodate the expansion of 8 other shuttle boxes/testing stations and can be run from a single computer. This allows for scaling up with the cost of additionally computers and decrease the overall foot print/space needed for testing. Each unit/system is connected via USB interfaces and are not operated by specific interface cards and ribbon cables (these are prone to breaking and corrosion) Auto Door for partitioning interior cage compartments does not startle rodents. A noisy door can induce a freezing behavior in the animal affecting the test. This would result in costly repeated studies. Auto Door closes using only gravity to prevent injury to the animal. Independent starts on each station or shuttle box System can be ordered in Shock and Air Stimuli models. Shock level indicator must show the shock level being delivered to the animal. Three cued stimuli (on each side), house light, cue light and sound are controlled by the software and can be used individually or in any combination. Sound cue is delivered by a speaker connected to the PC sound card. User can construct any sound cue within the capability of the PC sound card, white noise, tone, etc. Tone frequency maximum is 20 KHz(speaker limit). Software screens tell the user immediately what is happening. The need for indicator lights on the unit, touted by some competitors as a benefit, to tell you the unit is operational is not required. 16 photo beams (8 on each side) to provide accurate location of the animal. Individual beams came be turned off to assure an animal is fully in a compartment before being sensed. User can set a delay for the unconditioned stimulus to be applied after the gate closes in the Passive Avoidance Paradigm. This disassociates the unconditioned stimulus from the gate closing leading to better learning and memory results. Shocker Unit has two ranges available 0-5milliamps and 0-2milliamps. System has been used and referenced by the major behavior lab groups within the US and Europe. There are over a 100 references and the device represents the best value and technology (safe for rodents and reliable data output). Easy-to-use, menu-based software assure reliable and accurate data Delivery Period (contract term) Date of award + 90 days Type of Contract: Firm Fixed Price This notice is not a request for competitive proposals, however; any responsible source who believes it is capable of meeting the requirement may submit a capability statement to the contracting office no later than Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 12:00 Noon, EST. Interest/capability statements may be sent to Linda Buccigrossi, Contracting Officer, at linda.buccigrossi@va.gov and should include company name, address, and point of contact, business size, socio economic status; and product information. No telephone responses will be accepted. This notice is to assist the Government in determining sources only. A solicitation is not currently available.
