- Description
- The Senior Regional Biomedical HIV Prevention Advisor will be based at the Regional HIV/AIDS Program (RHAP) in USAID/Southern Africa, Pretoria, South Africa. One of RHAP's objectives is to provide quality technical assistance to Missions that have PEPFAR programs in the southern Africa region, and as available, beyond the region. To this end, RHAP has a cadre of high caliber Technical Advisors in the areas of Care and Treatment, OVC, Pediatric and Adolescent Care and Treatment, Nutrition, HSS/HRH, Strategic Information (SI), and Bio-Medical Prevention. RHAP seeks to recruit a Senior Regional Bio Medical Advisor to be part of the skilled team of regional advisors that have recognized expertize in the implementation of PEPFAR programs in the region. The region that RHAP supports, Southern Africa, remains the epicenter of the global AIDS epidemic. According to UNAIDS, in 2014 Swaziland had the highest HIV prevalence in the world at 27.7%, followed by Botswana (25.2%) and Lesotho (23.4%). The 9 highest-prevalence countries in the world are in Southern Africa. In the region, only Angola, at 2.4% prevalence has an HIV prevalence of less than 10%. While the rate of new infections is declining in every country, and the number of people living with HIV who are on antiretroviral treatment has increased more than 30-fold since 2004, there are still enormous challenges to reaching the goal of an AIDS Free Generation. In 2014, an estimated 13.6 million people in the region are infected, only 46% (6.4m) of whom are on ART. To achieve the 90-90-90 goal of 81% of PLHIV on ART by 2020, an additional 4.6m PLHIV must be put on ART in the next 5 years. The impact of HIV in the region is also compounded by a rampant tuberculosis epidemic.
