Description
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) is developing a cryogenic system for the Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II) located at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) in Menlo Park, CA. LCLS-II is a U.S. Department of Energy project tasked to design and build a world-class x-ray free-electron laser facility for scientific research. The LCLS-II accelerator (Linac) design is based on superconducting radio frequency technology employing thirty-five 1.3 GHz SRF cryomodules and two 3.9 GHz SRF cryomodules in continuous wave operation. The cryogenic distribution system consists of the equipment needed to feed and return cryogens from the cryogenic plant to the cryomodules throughout the entire Linac. The L3 part of the Linac consists of 20 cryomodules from CM16 to CM35. The L3 Vacuum Break Box (VBB) assembly will be installed in the middle of the L3 String, between CM25 and CM26 The supplier will have to design and manufacture the assembly according to ASME B31.3 and ASME VIII div 1. The device will be composed of: • A vacuum shell • A vacuum barrier • 6 helium process pipes (5 x 2" rated for 20 bar abs + 1x12" rated at 4.1 bar abs ) • A 3" line composed of UHV piping and components, all dismountable. Fabrication drawing are in scope of the supplier, but not the manufacturing. This line is equipped with an automatic shut-off valve (out of scope supply) and vacuum pump branch connection on each side. • A thermal shield anchored at 55K on one of the process pipes. • A large sliding bellow on one side of the device (DN1130) • Redundant surface temperature sensors on each process pipe. • Multi-layer insulation • Tooling Ball Socket for • Its supports • Overall dimensions of the package is Lxlxh = 2.5m x 1.5 m x 1.6m The vacuum break shall be design for seismic condition provided by SLAC. The device and its support shall be also designed for a differential pressure across the vacuum break of 1.5 bar in each direction. The heat losses on the helium pipes (2K supply, 2 K return, 5 K supply, 7.5 K return, 35 K supply, and 55 K return) and the beam tube (2K) shall be limited to 10 W at 2K, 2W at 5K and 70W at 35K. The vendor shall deliver the components to SLAC with installation instruction.
