- The Government awarded to American Institutes for Research a 36 month contract to evaluate the impact of a low-cost technology-based parent messaging intervention on student attendance and achievement. More specifically, the evaluation will use a sequential, multiple assignment, randomized trial (SMART) design to measure the effectiveness of different initial messaging strategies, and to see if there are any benefits to following up with more intensive or augmented strategies for parents who do not respond to the initial ones. The evaluation will focus on low-performing elementary schools that serve a high percentage of disadvantaged students (for example, schools eligible for or receiving School Improvement Grants (SIG)) and that face challenges with chronic absenteeism. This is a new requirement that has not been completed in the past.
