Description
Vicinity Map Description of Work - The Sawmill Stewardship Project is located on the Salida Ranger District of the San Isabel National Forest encompassing the area indicated on the Timber Removal and Contract Area Map within the Salida Ranger District boundary to the south and National Forest Service Road 174 to the north. Objectives for the project area are summarized as follows: • Improve Forest Health - Provide growing space for healthy trees and create conditions in treated forest stands that are less favorable for mountain pine beetle and western spruce budworm infestations for the next 20 - 30 years. • Reduce the Risk of High Intensity Wildfire - Provide mechanical and manual fuel treatments that would reduce ladder fuels, canopy bulk density, and increase torching index. Remove existing mortality caused by MPB and western spruce budworm in order to reduce high levels of heavy down dead fuel loading. • Increase Stand Resiliency - Promote a diversity of tree species, age classes, and structural stages that would lead to the development of uneven-aged stands. • Improve Big Game Habitat - Promote, enhance, and expand aspen regeneration to improve wildlife habitat. Reduce stand densities to encourage grass and forb production for big game. To accomplish these objectives, the contract includes the following components: stand thinning, mechanical fuels reduction, non-commercial thinning, piling of fuels, and timber or other products removal. (b) Resulting Contract - Any resultant contract will be a commercial services contract with requirements for timber removal. (c) Project Location - Project is located in Township 51 North, Range 10 East, Sections 8, 9, and 10; NMPM.. A Site Visit is scheculed for August 17, 2016 at 10:00 AM. Please call James Gerleman if interested in attending. Two new updated Maps attached.
