- Description
- Control Dog Urine Samples and Measuring the Levels of Amino Acid Solicitation In 2007, the FDA began receiving and investigating reports of illnesses in pets associated with the consumption of jerky pet treats (JPT). A small number of these reports suggest Fanconi-like syndrome (FS), a very rare kidney disease. Since 2012, the Center for Veterinary Medicine's Office of Research Vet-LIRN Program began collecting urine from dogs reporting various illnesses after JPT ingestion. Vet-LIRN screens dog urine for FS using a semi-quantitative method, and archives the samples for potential additional testing. The top pure-bred and mixed breeds testing FS positive are the Maltese, Shih Tzu, Chihuahua, Poodle, Dachshund, and Yorkshire Terrier.
