- Description
- Contracting Office Address Department of Commerce (DoC), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Office of Acquisition and Agreements Management (OAAM), Acquisition Management Division (AMD), 100 Bureau Drive, Building 301, Room B129, Mail Stop 1640, Gaithersburg, MD, 20899-1640 This is a Sources Sought Notice ONLY. Requests for copies of a solicitation will not receive a response. This Notice is for planning purposes only and is not a Request for Proposal or Request for Quotation or an obligation on the part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for conducting a follow-on acquisition. NIST does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this Notice, or otherwise pay for the information requested. No entitlement or payment of direct or indirect costs or charges by NIST will arise as a result of submission of responses to this Notice and NIST use of such information. NIST recognizes that proprietary components, interfaces and equipment, and clearly mark restricted or proprietary components, interfaces and equipment, and clearly mark restricted or proprietary data and present it as an addendum to the non-restricted/non-proprietary information. In the absence of such identification, NIST will assume to have unlimited rights to all technical data in the information paper. NO SOLICITATION DOCUMENTS EXIST AT THIS TIME. Section I - Sources Sought Information: A component of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Robot Systems for Smart Manufacturing Program is focused on the development of performance metrics and test methods to support next-generation robotic hands. Robotic hand performance evaluations will help to match the capabilities of hands to end-user needs as well as to provide developers of these hands insight for improving their product designs. Robotic hands are an integrated system of mechatronics, sensors and control algorithms ranging from three fingered designs to five fingered anthropomorphic designs having both fully and under articulated joints sometimes with built in compliance. Designs incorporate a variety of sensing technologies that include at the basic level, no sensing, current sensing at the drive motors or more advanced sensing capabilities, including fingertip embedded 6-axis load cells, pressure-sensing tactile sensors, and bio-inspired tactile sensing capable of resolving point of contact directional forces as well as other sensing modalities such as vibration and temperature resulting in a multitude of control strategies. This wide scope of performance characteristics requires a modular set of performance metrics and associated performance test methods that can be chosen based on a defined set of grasp types the hand can perform as well as a hand classification scheme that includes sensing and control capabilities. Ensuring that these metrics and test methods encapsulate next-generation robot hand technologies requires NIST to maintain a testbed of commercially available robotic hands that sufficiently represents the latest advancements in robotic hand technology. A robotic hand that incorporates soft fluidic actuated fingers to grasp parts often termed "soft robotics" is required to conduct measurement science experiments to support the development of performance measures and test methods for next-generation robotic hand technologies. The specifications for a commercially available system are as follows: •Number of Fingers: Four •Finger Configuration: Two (2) pairs of opposing fingers with optional finger base rotation for four (4) fingered radial grasp. •Actuation method: pneumatic inflation •Tactile Sensing: Fingertip based touch sensing preferable but not required •Grasp Volume: (Max)120mm x 120 mm x 120mm - (MIN)20mm x 20mm x20mm •Max Hand Weight: 2.3 KG (5 lbs) •Payload: 0.9KG (2 lbs) ========== NIST is seeking responses from all responsible sources, including large, foreign, and small businesses. The small business size standard associated with the NAICS code 334111 - Electronic Computer Manufacturing is 1,250 employees. Please include your company's size classification and socio-economic status in any response to this notice. Section II - Response Instructions: After results of this market research are obtained and analyzed, NIST may conduct a competitive procurement and subsequently award a contract. Companies that can provide such products/services are requested to email a written response describing their abilities to chantel.adams@nist.gov and divya.soni@nist.gov no later than the response date for this sources sought notice. Interested parties shall describe the capabilities of their organization as it relates to the products/services described above.
